Raising Addiction Awareness in Boyle County

The 5K was held in honor of those who had lost loved ones to drug overdoses.

The 5K run was held in honor of Jenna Caudill, a local woman who died from a drug overdose earlier this year in February. Jenna’s sister Alylisa Caudill wanted the 5K to not only honor her sister, but others in the community who have lost friends and family members to drug overdoses.

The 5K event was sponsored by several local vendors — including Family Medical Centers — and saw over 100 people participating in the run. Those attending the event could obtain information about rehab and addiction treatment, and participate in a silent auction to raise money for the Boyle County Agency for Substance Abuse Policy. ASAP is now using funds raised by the event to send local residents who suffer from addiction to nearby rehab centers.

Anita Coffey of Family Medical Centers says she specifically attended the 5K run with the primary goal of raising awareness about addiction. Coffey says she lost one of her mentors to a drug overdose, and now has a personal and professional investment in helping individuals overcome addiction. She says Boyle County needs to continue hosting events such as these that raise awareness about addiction, especially since the county could use more resources for rehab.

Benefits of Rehab Treatment for Boyle County Residents

Individuals who struggle with drug or alcohol addiction can safely and successfully overcome addiction with help from a rehab program. Rehab centers have resources and treatments that can help any individual achieve lifelong sobriety, no matter how severe or intense their addiction. Helping Boyle County residents overcome addiction can help improve public safety, and save the state up to millions in tax dollars that would otherwise be spent on hospitalization and incarceration fees for addicts.

Individuals who join rehab programs begin treatment with detox. The purpose of detoxification is to help addicts eliminate alcohol and other substances from their bodies so they can begin the next phase of treatment. At many rehab centers, the detox phase is performed under close medical supervision so recovering addicts can get the help and support they need when side effects and withdrawal symptoms are at their most severe.

Following the detox phase, patients attend counseling and therapy sessions to learn more about how to overcome addiction, and about how to navigate the real world outside of rehab without alcohol or drugs. Recovering addicts also learn how to implement healthy lifestyle habits, and receive ongoing education about addiction to help lower the risk for relapse. Patients can leave rehab feeling happier, healthier, and sober, and ready to take back their lives having overcome addiction.
